The purpose of digital image correlation (DIC) is to provide a non-contact, optical method for measuring and visualizing the full-field shape, displacement, and strain of an object under load. It is used in experimental mechanics to accurately map deformation across an entire surface, which is especially useful for small, light, or complex objects that are difficult to measure with traditional contact-based methods like strain gauges. DIC quantifies both 2D and 3D displacement and strain fields on a specimen's surface. It provides full-field data for determining material properties, such as elastic modulus, and for assessing specimen quality by identifying hidden defects
